There is elasticity resilience, continuity in the fascia surrounding the structure of bones. You should hold the band with two arms bringing it around the body. Using the band helps to facilitate the concept that the fascia has a tone and it is elastic at the same time. The band keeps the continuity in the body. Youe should try and make the movement smooth and fluid by going up and down. Move up and down, using your balance and ensure that the movements are not jerky. There is a balance of tension in the movement and a re-distribution of tone in the muscles, depending on the position. Try it while rolling on the floor. There is a rebound quality if you need to let go of the band in order to change the position and recover.
In this video, Cohen demonstrates how she moves the fascia around the organs instead of moving from the organs. The movement becomes fluid, smoother and organic in nature. The movement goes through her arms and legs. She lies on her back with her knees folded, or her knees up pointing to the ceiling. She cautioned her students not to twist their knees while moving. This movement can be explored in various positions on the back or lying on the side.
Moving the fascia around the organs can bring about interesting and organic movement vocabulary for the dancer in Improvisation. This create new avenues of exploring fascia located in other parts of the body and examine how the fascia can affect that particular organ. The dance can also explore how that sensation leads and move through other pathways in the body moving the body accordingly to that impulse.
