Lying on her tummy on a mat palms facing downwards; Cohen explores how the lower back controls the head and the hands. Cohen finds “one can use the lower back to lift the head and can use the scapula to lift the hands.” An individual can move one’s head in planes (right to left) and in a figure eight (axis) as one lifts the head up from gravity. These planes allow a human to move the head three-dimensionally. To experience this, one yield into the floor, with the lower back and the shoulders pressing into the ground, slowly rotating the head from one side to another.
Application of dance technique: A form of relaxation to relieve tension in the body and shoulders. It helps to free the muscles in the neck and release the head as it moves from side to side. One can feel the weight of one’s body as he or she presses into the floor. It allows the dancer to be aware of the different muscles groups in the lower back and explore the connection with the rest of the body part. A dancer can explore bodily sensations by pressing his or her pelvis into the floor, and observing how does the rest of their body react to that particular sensation.
