Dancers do not have the tool to evaluate how they are moving. They think they know what they are doing right, but in fact they are doing something different. The Alexander Technique allows the dancer to gauge the feelings of the right movement. It also helps the dancer establish control. Without control, the dancer is unable to do it. Dancers have no understanding and awareness of the sequences of habits and scientific method of calibrating their bodies. Through the method, they can understand their bodies in movement. The Alexander Technique stressed the awareness of a habit, and when there is an injury and one part of the body hurts, additional stress is placed on it.
When one senses the body, one can achieve maximum lift and height, making the dance steps freer, extended and lifted. The video also explains the primary curve, secondary curves that a dancer is involved in executing a tendu devant and tendu derriere. Applying awareness and consciousness with tools of the Alexander Technique allows the dancer to notice habits and improve overall dance technique. The Alexander Technique is a means for movement exploration to discover and understand one’s body functions, connections and movement quality.
